对着issue题妄图抽丝剥茧,往往却发现原来我的大脑是一团乱麻,好容易寻到线头,稍使劲一抽便断鸟。。。某个完全丧失理智的下午,一气看完了“伤城” 和"it happened one night", 在别的理智残存的傍晚,看完了"history boy"(非常fresh&smart的英国校园片),"good night and good luck" (不容易啊,藏了一年了),以及某次只想为写文章找找论据,又重看了一遍"dead poets society", again, 心潮澎湃。。。
besides these, i never miss a single episode of those dramas i watch...-.=
Issue112 “Some educational systems emphasize the development of students’ capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benefit more from an education that also taught them to explore their own emotions.”
I fundamentally agree with the speaker's assertion. In my eye, the exploration of emotions and development of reasoning and logical thinking capacity are of equal importance, and should be placed on the same emphasis. Sadly, however, many schools fail to recognize this. To better illustrate my viewpoint let me develop in details.
To begin with, helping students explore their emotions is likely to solve a number of teen problems which have been rising rapidly recent years. Teen violence, for instance, if teenagers could feel more love and sympathy for others, they would find little interesting those bloodshed video games or TV shows, and would stay away from violent means and try not to hurt others as best as they could. Another focusing issue is teen suicide. Had those young victims been able to open up their minds, express their feelings and get the help they needed, they might have avoided the fatal depression and eventually taking their own lives. In addition, exploring emotions can also in turn add to studying other subjects, including reasoning and logical thinking, since positive emotions contribute to healthy mental state and motivation for studying, with which a student is most effective to learn.
I concede that the ability of reasoning and logical thinking is critical in one's academic work and future career. Without this a student is hardly possible to attain the top rank and make himself a doctor, lawyer or engineer. Nevertheless, we should fully understand that there are two distinctive respects that distinguish human from animals: highly developed intelligence and complex rich emotions. Years of scientific researches have indicated that animals are intelligent to some extent but so far no evidence has proved that animals are capable of feeling happy or sad. Only human beings can tell the differences between tears of joy and of grief, and smiles of delight and of sorrow. Therefore, emotion is as if a splendid treasure that is possessed by human beings exclusively. As in one of the most inspiring movie, Dead Poets Society, Mr. Keating, an English teacher who encourages his students to explore their emotions and define their individualities, said," Human race is full of passion. Medicine, law, engineering, these are noble pursuits and necessary to sustain life. But poetry, beauty, romance, love, these are what we stay alive for." It is simply a shameful waste if we neglect the exploration of emotions.
Some may argue that to teach students explore their emotions is of little value in academic disciplines unless for those who intend to master in arts, after all, artistic ideas and inspirations spring from feelings and emotions. Such argument assumes that the purpose of education is to make students well equipped for jobs and careers, that the function of schools is as a training center for qualified workers. Accordingly only those who make a living by expressing private emotions are justifiable to explore their emotions. Unfortunately for these artists, if others didn't care much even to explore their own emotions, who is going to appreciate their works of arts? Therefore, a student is not merely a cog that the school produces to serve the mechanism of the society; a child is not another brick in the wall that education makes to construct the house of prosperity. To explore one’s emotions is essential for being a free thinker, with unchained imagination, whose heart is filled with compassion for others' pain and suffering. To instruct students explore their emotions means to guide them to hold the faith that they can be better persons and the world can be made better by them. Obviously this is the true purpose of education. Thus the exploration of emotions should be applied to everyone.
To sum up, development in reasoning and logical thinking makes one's brain smarter but it is the exploration of emotions that makes the mind stronger. Schools ought to realize that to explore one's emotions also requires proper instructions, guidance and practices, just like to acquire any other knowledge and capacity.
